Red-naped Sapsucker

Sphyrapicus nuchalis - migrant - eats sap, insects, fruits

Red-naped Sapsucker

Visits in spring and fall for a few days at a time, these photos were taken in early April 2009. It was funny to watch this bird guard the apple from all others much to the dismay of a Pyrrhuloxia that is used to eating the apples everyday. I tried putting two apple halves out on opposite sides of the tree but the sapsucker guarded both.
